Fight Global Warming & Climate Change with Australia's first Greenhouse Friendly, Carbon Neutral Pub
The saying “Carbon neutral beer, anyone?” may sound foreign to you for now… but not for long.
The Agincourt Hotel is proud to say it’s Australia’s first greenhouse friendly, carbon neutral pub! This makes The Agincourt the first pub in Australia to offer its clients the opportunity to order carbon neutral beer and to help offset greenhouse emissions. It does this by investing 2.5 cents from each beer sold into energy efficiency initiatives and landfill methane abatement projects. By doing so, the Agincourt Hotel has negated its carbon footprint by giving back to the environment what it takes out and more
Recent energy efficiency measures involving the installations of LED downlights have resulted in a direct saving of 5.43 Tonnes of CO2e every year.
The Agincourt Hotel and the Carbon Reduction Institute also offer you the option to offset your unavoidable carbon emissions:

Newsletter extractIn January 2008, we spoke to Matthew Jones, owner of the Agincourt Hotel, about how he perceived his first year being carbon neutral.
One thing Jones noticed in particular was how the public perception of his hotel has changed over the last year. “We’ve had a mass amount of media coverage and interest from the public. Our staff has reported a lot of enquiries from customers about the process of becoming carbon neutral”.
Jones reported that his hotel’s turnover has remained steady over the past year, even when the new smoking laws kicked in last July and many pubs were experiencing losses.
The Agincourt Hotel has undergone quite a few changes in the past year in an effort to reduce its carbon footprint. Jones has taken out 7 fridges from his hotel and replaced them with a single cool room, running only on one motor. This has dropped power consumption noticeably. Furthermore, the Agincourt now operates on only two hot water systems instead of three, and energy saving light bulbs were installed in most of the hotel’s sections.
Jones has ambitious projects planned for next year. “In 2008, we want to become a completely green, carbon neutral hotel. We are currently working on designs and plans to have solar panels installed on the roofs of the Agincourt.”
Jones is also investigating in establishing a paperless office. He is currently sending out around 80 sheets of paper every day. These will in the near future be replaced with electronic files.
By implementing these initiatives, Jones projected that the price for making your beer carbon neutral will drop from 2.5 cents to 1.5 cents per drink in the coming year.
“The biggest change for us is that we are now much more aware about what climate change means and what we can do about it. Before we make a decision concerning the hotel, we now always ask ourselves: Can we do this green-wise?”
Matthew Jones is owner of Australia’s first carbon neutral hotel, the Agincourt Hotel on Broadway. To find out more about the Agincourt, please visit www.agincourthotel.com.au or drop by for a carbon neutral beer at 871 George Street, Sydney NSW 2000.
